Committee of 21 Recommendations
The Transportation Committee of 21, seven members appointed by Mecklenburg County, City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Chamber, recently made recommendations to the general public on how to fund and manage our future road construction and maintenance needs.
No surprise, the group said we need more money than is currently available and recommended the citizens consider a group of new or altered revenue sources---when the economy has improved. These sources of revenue include an additional half cent on the sales tax, doubling the vehicle registration fee to $60 per, tolling the interstates and considering replacing the gas tax with a vehicle miles traveled (vmt) fee, or the more you drive, the more you pay.
To administer this new flow of money, the group suggested that Mecklenburg County and the seven municipalities in the county adopt an interlocal agreement outlining how the money will be spent and who would be on that board. For full details on this report, go to ____________________.
