Air Quality Challenge
The Charlotte region is failing to meet new Federal standards for air quality, a condition which could result in limiting Federal and State dollars for transportation construction and maintenance. The main culprits are the unhealthy levels of ozone and nitrous oxide in our atmosphere which are exceeding current standards for clean air.
Our transportation planning board, the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization (MUMPO) has suspended the addition of new development projects until a new air quality plan can be developed. The new plan will be presented and reviewed by local, State and Federal officials in Spring of 2010.
